Omakase Sushi by Korean Chefs in Vancouver: Sushi Bar Shu

Sushi Bar Shu opened in December 2018. It is surrounded by bubble tea stores and Chinese restaurants in Marpole. The place was empty when we arrived, but by 8 o’clock all the counter seats were occupied.

The menu is omakase only.

Chawanmushi with shrimp and shiitake mushroom

The chawanmushi had porous, but the taste of dashi was nice.

Flounder and yellowtail sashimi.

Yellowtail could be smelly and soggy when it’s not fresh, but this sashimi was super fresh and tasty.

Three kinds of appetizer.

The grilled fish was very nice.

Sushi Nigiri

Grunt, Blackthroat seaperch,  gurnard, hotate, etc.

The fish is imported from Japan and locally caught. The freshness of the white fish is excellent, and they melt in my mouth.

Toro and vinegared mackerel were excellent. The egg was a bit too sweet for me.

Dessert was cheese cake.

The chefs are Korean, but they were trained in Octopus Garden in Vancouver. They learned their skill from a Japanese chef.

To be honest, I was not sure if I would enjoy their sushi when I heard that the chefs are not Japanese. However, I was very satisfied with the quality, quantity, price and taste of the omakase course. If I had to say, there were a few things like the way the plates were served or the service that Japanese would not do. Well, we are in Canada and it’s totally fine.

I definitely recommend a seat at the counter. You can enjoy the conversation with the chefs and see beautiful work by them.

Their Oamakase used to be much more affordable, but the menu has been changed as of 2021.
