Our goal at Ogojo Canada is to build a supportive community for immigrant women living in Canada. We believe that by connecting with and empowering each other, we can create a better future for ourselves and our families.
We founded Ogojo Canada in 2017 with that exact vision in mind. The name “Ogojo” comes from the Kagoshima dialect and represents a woman with a gentle soul and a strong heart. We strive to embody those qualities in our work and in our community, and we look forward to welcoming more women into the fold.
Our thoughts
Since moving to Canada, we’ve had the pleasure of meeting many talented immigrant women. Unfortunately, we’ve also seen the frustration that comes with being unable to fully showcase one’s talents due to language barriers, lack of education or work experience, and a lack of connections in Canada. Many of these women were highly educated and successful in their home countries, and it was disheartening to see them struggling to adapt to their new home.
As immigrants ourselves, we understand the sense of loss that comes with feeling like our previous accomplishments aren’t being recognized, and the challenges of adjusting to a new culture and language.
Despite these obstacles, we chose to make Canada our home and we’re determined to thrive here. We believe that by coming together and supporting each other, we can more easily integrate into Canadian society and leverage our individual strengths to succeed.
As Japanese immigrants, we see it as our role to use our “Japaneseness” as a strength to achieve our goals and at the same time, share our culture with Canadian society.
Mission
“To act as a bridge between immigrant women residing in Canada and Canadian society, while also fostering a community of mutual support.”
Vision
Establishing a platform to bridge communication across language and cultural barriers, while also promoting Japanese-ness and values within Canadian society through inclusive activities that foster connection and engagement.
Social Network
On our Instagram, we share daily moments and experiences that showcase the life of Japanese women in Canada. Our aim is to post at least one update per week that highlights the unique perspective and voice of Japanese women living in Canada.
